In 2020, the world will celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday. As part of the Philharmonic Society's Beethoven@250 celebration, Dutch conductor Edo de Waart leads the San Diego Symphony in an all-Beethoven program. The powerful and expressive Egmont Overture, with its thrilling climactic endings, acts as a foil to his Sixth Symphony (“Pastoral”), with its buoyant and lighthearted melody taking listeners on a journey through the Viennese countryside..
Edo de Waart established a notable conducting career in the last third of the 20th century, becoming known for rich, exhilarating performances in a wide range of repertory. Edo de Waart has received a number of awards for his musical achievements, including becoming a Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion and an Honorary Officer in the General Division of the Order of Australia. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
In the 100-plus years since its inception, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra has become one of the most significant orchestras in the United States and was designated a Tier 1 Orchestra by the League of American Orchestras in 2010. Committed to providing musical experiences of superior quality for the greater San Diego community and beyond, the orchestra is known for their rich mixture of innovative and educational programming designed to appeal to all ages and cultures. An internationally acclaimed conductor and a product of the education program El Sistema (as is Gustavo Dudamel), Rafael Payare, took on the role as Music Director Designate in 2019, bringing the symphony to new heights.
