Santa Ana Sites #7 - Ate9 dANCE cOMPANY

Presented by Santa Ana Sites at SAC Arts at the Santora Building

Santa Ana Sites is pleased to announce that critically acclaimed dance company, Ate9, called “one of Los Angeles’ hottest cultural commodities” (Victoria Looseleaf, FJORD Review), will perform the world premiere of Queen George, a site-specific performance piece that combines dance, visual art, and custom-made furniture, in Santa Ana’s historic Santora Building. Lauded choreographer and Batsheva Dance Company alum, Danielle Agami, has collaborated with Israeli designer and carpenter, Amir Raveh, to create this innovative dance installation.

Queen George will feature Ate9 dancers performing duets throughout the gallery, rotating every half hour, while private rooms will feature a one-on-one dance performance, allowing guests to come and go throughout the evening. In this highly curated exhibition space, Raveh’s colorful, one-off furnishings, which incorporate workshop leftovers and remnants to create a patchwork of old and new, will serve as the backdrop for the dancers. The performances will be accented by a visual art component courtesy of Avi Roth, who will exhibit his abstract expressionist works of art called Coffeegraph®.

In Queen George, Agami dissolves the unseen wall between our public behavior and our secrets, needs and passions, offering an intimate setting that encourages the audience to ask themselves some hidden questions. Amir Raveh’s design work blurs boundaries of its own, blending leftover furniture parts with new materials to create compelling, patchwork designs constructed with exact precision.

Artist Avi Roth’s Coffeegraphs® bring a visual arts element to Queen George that aligns with the event’s experimental and innovative themes. Roth’s new and unique art form is a multi-step process that begins with coffee beans then applies grinds and other coffee by-products as pigment.
