Lessons from the Past Featuring Sam Mihara

Presented by Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center at Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center

Participants will listen to a riveting presentation by Sam Mihara and Mr. Mihara will take questions from the audience. This presentation will be followed by an exclusive screening of And Then They Came for Us, featuring George Takei.

Sam Mihara is a second-generation Japanese American.  His parents were born in Japan and immigrated to the U.S. in the 1920’s.  Sam was born in the early 1930’s and raised in San Francisco.  When World War II broke out, the U.S. government forced Sam and his family to move, first to a camp in Pomona, CA and then to a remote camp in Wyoming, where they stayed for three years.  Sam’s family lived in a single room, measuring 20 feet by 20 feet, for their entire imprisonment.  Come hear about Sam’s journey before, during and after WWII.

After Sam Mihara’s presentation, join us for an exclusive screening of And Then They Came for Us, featuring George Takei.  Seventy-five years ago, Executive Order 9006 paved the way to the profound violation of constitutional rights and the forced incarceration of tens of thousands of Japanese Americans.  This unique film features George Takei and others who were incarcerated as well as newly discovered photographs of Dorothea Lange.  This remarkable documentary brings history into the present.  Screening time will be approximately 3 p.m.
