The Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg makes its eighth visit to Segerstrom Center for the Arts with a West Coast premiere of Boris Eifman’s newest work, Up and Down. Set to the sumptuous music of Alban Berg, Franz Schubert and George Gershwin, this full-length ballet by the company’s renowned founder and artistic director delves into Sigmund Freud’s view of the unconscious mind through a tumultuous love story. Placed in the dazzling, decadent 1920s, the production is a narrative ballet of young love that is destroyed by the deep psychological complications between a woman and man.
