The Marriage of Bette and Boo

By Christopher Durang

Directed by Jeff Paul

Christopher Durang, one of America's greatest satirists, paints a sardonic, grotesque, and hilarious caricature of his own family, in which alcoholism and mental illness tore apart multiple generations.

Spanning thirty years in the dysfunctional marriage of Bette and Boo Hudlocke, the play is told in 33 (mostly) quick scenes that are a mixture of seriousness and comedy.

Shortly after its 1985 opening at Joe Papp’s New York Shakespeare Festival, the play won a number of Obie awards for Durang (playwriting), for Jerry Zaks (directing), for Loren Sherman (set design), and an Ensemble Acting Obie for the entire 10 person cast. Later that year the play also won the prestigious Dramatists Guild Hull Warriner Award.

The New Yorker noted that “Christopher Durang, the humorist and satirist, has rarely written anything funnier or more serious…he has perfected the art of turning bitterness into comedy without losing its edge.”

USA Today said “Wicked, wonderful and cartoony…’Bette and Boo’ is both demented and compassionate. And wise, hysterical and incredibly sad. There is not a false note or extra word.”
