The Sunday Musicale will kick off National Library Week for Newport Beach Public Library with a genre-bending performance by pianist/composer Ryan Whyman and accompanying cellist and violinist. A talented musician, Ryan began studying classical piano at age 6. Studying with world renowned Sofia Zukerman, he developed a passion for improvisation from an early age. As Ryan grew older, his classical piano skills quickly expanded into the jazz realm, as well as the realms of pop, rock, and assorted other genres.
Whyman’s diverse compositional skills and improvisational abilities have given him a broad range of musical opportunities, writing and playing for film, TV shows, commercials and other genres. His award-winning musical projects have ranged from developing The Whyman Project, a chamber jazz ensemble, to compositions for choir and orchestra to a collaboration with an internationally renowned rapper, poet and spoke word artist. Whyman’s varied repertoire gives a sense of the many influences that make his art special, blending many genres together with his musical voice a common thread that weaves his repertoire into a connected whole.
