Torobaka starring Akram Khan and Israel Galván

Torobaka starring Akram Khan and Israel Galván

Presented by Irvine Barclay Theatre at Unknown

U.S. premiere

Akram Khan is a celebrated contemporary dance choreographer as well as a kathak dancer of renown. During the last decade, he has created wildly imaginative, accessible and relevant work such as the full-evening productions of DESH, Vertical Road (presented at the Barclay in October 2012), Gnosis and zero degrees. The multi award-winning Israel Galván is the avant garde of flamenco, now a cross-over artist famed for his sensational choreography and exquisite dancing technique. Well before his star rose in the skies of the international contemporary dance scene, his was a featured company in the Barclay’s New World Flamenco Festival (August 2003).

Torobaka is a unique, genre-bending creative collaboration between two master choreographers and dancers. The Irvine concert will be the first of only four engagements in the U.S. of this London-based, Sadler’s Wells' production.

The name of the production is taken from a Maori-inspired phonetic poem by Tristan Tzara. The bull (toro) and the cow (vaca) are sacred animals in the dancers’ respective Spanish and Indian traditions. The show’s title suggests a fusion of cultures and what beauty can be created from mutual respect and understanding.

The dancers are accompanied live by an extraordinary ensemble of musicians.
