Bowers Museum and the American Research Center for Egypt OC (ARCE) present an exclusive online lecture The Power of Ancient Egyptian Images with Dr. Rune Nyord, Assistant Professor of Ancient Egyptian Art and Archaeology at Emory University.
Ancient Egyptian material culture is full of images, but the ways in which they were used often contradict modern intuitions about how representations work.
This talk presents and discusses a number of examples that can provide clues to how the ancient Egyptians experienced and thought about images, from “portraits” idealized beyond recognition or even borrowing other peoples’ features, to figurines and drawings used to affect the depicted persons for good or ill.
