Symphonic Winds

Symphonic Winds

Presented by CSU Fullerton - College of the Arts at Meng Concert Hall, Cal State Fullerton

Patricia Cornett, conductor

About the program:

Sacred structures, both literal and figurative, are the inspiration for this program. Giovanni Gabrieli's "Canzon Quarti Toni" is a nod to one of the greatest sacred structures of all time, St. Mark's Cathedral. John Stevens' "Benediction" is followed by Cal State Fullerton faculty member Steven Mahpar's "The Archangel,” featuring faculty member Dennis Siebenaler on organ. A set of two miniatures, Grainger's "Blithe Bells" and Holst's "Fugue a la Gigue” are both inspired by music of the great sacred composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The concert will conclude with Cailliet's transcription of Wagner's powerful "Elsa's Procession to the Cathedral.”

About the Symphonic Winds:

The Symphonic Winds, conducted by Dr. Patricia Cornett, performs the best of the standard wind band repertory, with an emphasis on American composers and significant newer works. Members of the Symphonic Winds are selected by audition and typically perform two to three times each semester, while focusing on musical growth and expression as individuals and as an ensemble.
