Visual Acoustics - The Modernism of Julius Shulman

Presented by Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens at Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens

Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens is proud to present a documentary film about the modernist architectural photography of Julius Shulman, followed by a Q&A session with architecture historian and writer Ted Wells, at the upcoming Casa Up Close event on March 24, 2016 at 7:00 PM.

The 90 minute film, directed by Eric Bricker, examines the career of Julius Shulman (1910-2009), a photographer who brought the singular beauty of southern California’s modernist architecture movement to the attention of audiences worldwide. Starting with Richard Neutra and following with nearly every progressive architect thereafter including Frank Lloyd Wright, John Lautner, Frank Gehry and Pierre Koenig, Shulman immortalized their structures through his lens. His images are preserved by the Getty Research Institute and were the subject of a major Getty retrospective in 2006-2007.

After the film, architecture historian and writer Ted Wells will answer questions and lend insight into Shuler’s practice and influence. Wells is a past president of Society of Architectural Historians of Southern California, and is the creative director of Guardian Stewardship Editions, a publishing and media company devoted to the arts, architecture, thought, and culture.
