The exhibition is based on UCI Drama’s Historical Costume Collection, “A Contradictory Bloom.”
An up-close look at garments in the historical collection which feature floral embellishments or patterns, spanning approximately 60 years (i.e. 1890-1950) that speak to the woman under the garment.
The exhibition will allow viewers to move around the space and analyze each garment and its floral motif for themselves and understand 1) what the flower is, 2) the purpose/meaning of that flower in Western society, 3) what the motif says about the woman in how it was applied to the garment and how the garment was worn.
