DakhaBrakha

Presented by Santa Ana Sites and Irvine Barclay Theatre at Yost Theater

Internationally acclaimed folk-punk quartet DakhaBrakha will perform at the historic Yost Theater for the next installment of Santa Ana Sites.  Based out of Kiev, the Ukrainian musicians have been heralded for their riveting sound. Full-bodied harmonies and skilled instrumentation are spiked with off-kilter chants and syncopated drumbeats, resulting in an unforgettable experience that transcends language, age, and genre.

Visually striking with their towering lambs-wool hats and expanse of instruments, DakhaBrakha’s aesthetic sparks immediate intrigue. Their self-proclaimed “ethno urban chaos” sound captivates audiences with a re-envisioned form of Ukrainian roots music, incorporating the cello, djembe, didgeridoo, accordion and drums.

The versatile group was grown out of an underground, avant-garde theater troupe based in Kiev, and blossomed into a globetrotting act that has graced the stages of prestigious music festivals including Bonnaroo, globalFEST, and Rosklide. DakhaBrakha set out to reclaim the music of their ancestors while liberating their songs from purist ideology and post-Soviet concepts, allowing them to emerge as folk music alchemists. The group’s incredible form of folk-punk borrows from sounds across the globe, and creates a sound surprisingly minimalist sound reminiscent of the emotionally charged works of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich. DakhaBrakha offers a new form of roots music that’s radically different –ultimately placing Ukrainian folklore at the forefront of world music.
