2022-23 Faculty Artist Series: Lorna Griffitt, piano

2022-23 Faculty Artist Series: Lorna Griffitt, piano

Presented by Claire Trevor School of the Arts at UC Irvine (CTSA) at University of California, Irvine - Winifred Smith Hall

Lorna Griffitt will perform a piano recital featuring the fantastical Gaspard de la Nuit (Treasurer of the Night) by Maurice Ravel. Based on the poetry by Aloysius Bertrand, this dark, mysterious, terrifying and devilishly difficult work is one of the most challenging pieces written for the piano. Scarbo, the final movement, is a musical depiction of a goblin that laughs, growls, leaps and eventually disappears into the night. Also on the program will be the dramatic and tragic A minor sonata, written by Mozart in Paris at the time of his mother’s death along with the Chopin Ballade in F minor and Clara Schumann’s sumptuous Romance in G minor.
