Art in Context resumes at Bowers Museum with Renaissance Scholar, Lisa Boutin Vitela, presenting Venice: A Mythical and Historical City. This series explores Venice’s improbable rise from the lagoon and tracks Venetian art from late antiquity through today.
Venice’s improbable rise from the lagoon began with the development of key civic spaces that centered around the Rialto, St. Mark’s Square, and the Grand Canal. These spaces established the city’s cultural and economic ambitions and present artistic features linking it to the glittering gold icons and mosaics of Byzantium and the carved stone of Greco Roman antiquity.
