Books at Bowers: First Blush: People’s Intuitive Reactions to Famous Art

Presented by Bowers Museum at Bowers Museum

In April First Blush: People’s Intuitive Reactions to Famous Art by Dan Hill, noted author and lecturer, will be discussed. Since the way most people experience art is in a museum, the author has detailed his research study to unpack the visitor response and engagement with an art piece. His ground-breaking study involved 88 famous art works and 96 participants representing a cross-section of society. The results and implications for art appreciation may surprise the reader. “Using eye-tracking and facial coding, Dan Hill presents fascinating insights into our physical and emotional experiences viewing art…First Blush could very well be a game changer for museum engagement and interpretation.” (Suzanne Wright, Retired Director of Education and Community Engagement, The Phillips Collection.)

In conjunction with the national celebration of Slow Art Weekend April 15-16, book club participants will enjoy a Slow Art experience following the discussion.

The author will sign books after his lecture at Bowers Museum on Sunday, April 16 [separate lecture fee]. The book is available for purchase in the museum store. (202 pages, copyright 2019.)
