Impressionism was developed in France in the late 1860s and early 1870s in reaction to the strict orthodox standards set by the art establishment, which excluded the official participation of younger, more expressive artists. Inspired by the work of Claude Monet (1840-1926), an entire generation of painters revolutionized art in France and throughout the world with their novel approach to color use and subject matter.
