Volar

Betty Gold, 2020

John Wayne Airport is honored to be the recipient of a sculpture generously donated to the Airport’s permanent art collection. The sculpture, created by renowned artist Betty Gold, is titled Volar, which means “to fly”, and is located on Baggage Carousel 1, in Terminal A. VOLAR, created from welded steel panels, measures 26 1/2″ high by 37″ long and 20″ wide and is painted a vibrant green. Gold, one of the earliest female artists working in welded steel, is an established, internationally known professional artist who has shown in more than one hundred thirty solo and group exhibitions. She donated VOLAR because she always felt the sculpture would be at home at the Airport.

Gold said her continuing goal is “to create art that brings a sense of joy and imaginative flight to those who engage with it and that will endure long into the future.” She also hopes to motivate, represent, and inspire more women sculptors to assert themselves in the art market.
