Banners at Downtown Anaheim Community Center

Richard Turner

The Banners at Downtown Anaheim Community Center was created by Richard Turner.

The Downtown Community Center’s gymnasium is home to 6 unique art banners featuring children and seniors who use both of the Downtown facilities. By distributing disposable cameras to the facilities’ users and requesting that they become photographers for a few days, public artist Richard Turner creatively wove members of the public into his project design converting the users into art subjects. Selected photos featured on the banners demonstrate the emotions and attributes of some of the users – athleticism, concentration, academicism, and good old-fashioned fun.

By combining the pictures with powerful text on some of the banners – the words Enlightenment, Empowerment, and Involvement are emblazoned across three of the banners – each banner provides a visual interpretation of the Downtown Community Center’s purpose – to serve the community.
