Raising of Cattle

Raising of Cattle David Harrington The mural Raising of Cattle was painted with oils on wood by David Harrington. Laguna Hills resident David Harrington cannot remember a time when he did not love to draw. As a young boy growing up in Covina, California, he divided his attention between basketball and art. When he was about eight years old, a visit to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art tipped the scale in favor of the latter. "I stood looking at the beautiful paintings for hours and hours" he recalls, "and knew then that art would always be very important to me." Several years later, at the age of thirteen, he began to paint and has never stopped. For the Laguna Hills Civic Center lobby wall, David painted three impressionist scenes depicting the principal land uses in the Saddleback Valley: raising cattle, growing crops, and cultivating citrus groves. Before touching brush to wood, David studied historical photographs of the area and hiked over the land, noting carefully the ways in which light played across the gently rolling hills and creek-carved valleys, and imagining what the area might have looked like more than a century ago.

Raitt Street Mural

Raitt Street Mural Sergio O'Cadiz Moctezuma, 1994 In July 2019, the mural was white washed by the property owner. Mexican American artist Sergio O'Cadiz Moctezuma designed and painted Raitt Street Mural in 1994. It was funded through the city's Safe Haven Youth Program. Moctezuma painted the mural with help from volunteers from the community consisting of adults and children.

Reader's Festival Mural

Reader's Festival Mural Jennifer Koons, Cha-Rie, Melanie Yarak and Janet C. Panozzo The Reader's Festival Mural was created under the direction of artist Jennifer Koons, Cha-Rie, Melanie Yarak and Janet C. Panozzo; and commemorate City events or history. Professional artists prepare each project, and the individual tiles are painted by community members at City events. The goal of the community efforts is to produce a long-term benefit for many future generations to enjoy. The trail has been developed with numerous amenities and features that serve to educate and honor the community. These features include the Peace Obelisk to honor victims of 9/11, the mosaic history walls in the Character Garden, the vibrantly painted butterflies, the Celebration Garden, the Wave Wall on the Upper Oso Creek Trail, and the community murals surrounding the Village Green.

Readily Apparent

Readily Apparent Bret Price, 2016 The sculpture Readily Apparent by the local artist, Bret Price was installed near the front entry of the library. The sculpture was donated by Mr. David Wickersham, a past President of the Library Board of Trustees. Mr. Wickersham played a key role in the building of the Central Library back in 1975. Art has always played an important role in the Library, and the new addition enhances the front fountain area.

Reclining Figure

Reclining Figure Henry Moore, 1981 Reclining Figure by Henry Moore is located at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. A gift from "The Angels of the Arts" to the Center, it is a splendid example of the renowned sculptor's mature work. By designing a void in the mass of his Reclining Figure, Moore encourages us to see that space around the figure is as important as solid material. Through his mastery of open and closed form, Moore has captured the dignity and living force of a woman. It is easy to see the pre-Columbian influence in Moore's work; simple, massive, deeply human figures are clearly represented in his Reclining Figure. The works of this artist may be seen in New York City's Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. It is located outside the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Red Tail Hawk

Red Tail Hawk Michael Stutz, 2007 Approaching the east entrance to the Olinda Ranch Community one encounters a soaring, 6.1- meter wide, Red-tailed Hawk. Built of sheared, bronze strips welded together around a stainless steel armature, and supported by a 6.1-meter tall tapered pole, the sculpture combines twisting, woven, fluidity, with a bundled energy that recalls muscles with their potential for movement and feeling. The latticed quality of the construction allows sun light to sparkle and dance through the sculptural space, shifting constantly between the internal and external realms, and imparting a yielding, open quality to the large form. "The Red Tail Hawk, an immediately recognized part of the local environment, is a majestic symbol of our close connection to the natural world, and a call to respect and protect the delicate balance with the earth that humans control." Redoubling Wallpath

Redoubling Wallpath Lloyd Hamrol, 1972 This adobe sculpture is located on the North side of Visual Arts Center. Originally made up of nearly 1,000 burlap bags of earth and cement, this piece has gradually worn away to appear as the remains of an ancient ruin. It was a aquired through a joint venture between the National Endowment for the Arts through a grant for Art in Public Places and the Art Department. Hamrol was a visiting artist for the fall 1976 semester and students assisted with the installation. Nearly 1000 burlap bags were filled with earth and cement to construct the original uneven wall of seven triangular shapes. Again the forms were geometric and the shapes and the public context of this work suggested monumental geometric architecture such as the pyramids. However in contrast to those monuments to the past this environmental sculpture was meant to be a place where people could sit, lean, climb or rest—a place that would be personally nourishing, protecting, and reinforcing. Because of these interactions with people and time the burlap bags have long since disappeared. Here the deterioration of time has sped up as the adobe structure continues to wear away more each year so that today the piece stands like other monuments of the past that have been swallowed by jungles or worn away in deserts by wind and sun. Lloyd Hamrol (1937– ) earned his Masters degree from UCLA. He has concentrated on installations and site-specific works using non-art objects such as dry ice, adobe bricks, logs, stones, and sandbags. His work has been shown in major museums throughout the United States and he has completed a number of major outdoor site-specific sculptures including a river stone winding wall in the Anaheim Civic Center.

Repose

Repose Gerard Basil Stripling, 2003 Funded by the City of Laguna Beach Art in Public Places Laguna Beach artist Gerard Basil Stripling created this five piece functional sculpture on the point overlooking the ocean, Gerard explained, “I wanted it to look as though it had always been there, and that the land surrounding had only recently been excavated, revealing the rocks jutting into the ocean below.” Repose is a metal piece that stands on a narrow peninsula in Treasure Island Park, Laguna Beach. Five metal arcs are arranged to recall the rock formations and ocean waves below and serve as informal seating elements. Repose is part of the City’s percent-for-art program.The Architecture Foundation of Orange County recognized Artist Gerard Stripling with the 2006 Award of Special Recognition. Richard Henry Dana Jr.

Richard Henry Dana Jr. John R. Terken, 1972 This 1972 sculpture by John R. Terken has a view of the ocean and also a view of the Dana Cliffs. Richard Henry Dana Jr. was a seaman, politician, lawyer, and author. He is noted for being a defender of seamen and fujitive slaves. The City of Dana Point is named after him. He had traveled here (from his home in Massachusetts) and along the California coast in 1834 when the area was still part of Mexico. The plaque on the base of the sculpture reads: "Richard Henry Dana Jr./ 1815-1882/ In 1835, Dana arrived on board the brig 'Pilgrim', a tall-masted sailing ship out of Boston, bound for the California coast. For reasons of health, Dana left his studies at Harvard and at the age of 19 signed on to the 'Pilgrim' as a common sailor. Later he vividly described life on ship and on shore in his famous book "Two Years Before the Mast" (1840). In 1884 Dana Point was named in his honor, in memory of his brief visits and enthusiastic description of this beautiful place." Larger than life size, the full-length figure of Richard Henry Dana, Jr. is shirtless and wears pants which are rolled up to mid-calf. His proper right foot rests on a bitt, which represents the deck of a ship. In his proper right hand he holds a notebook. A sheathed knife hangs from his belt. His proper left arm is akimbo. The bronze figure stands on a square marble base which rests on a pyramidal concrete aggregate base.

Rise Above the Storm

Rise Above the Storm Brian Peterson and Damin Lujan, 2021 This mural is installed in Illumination Foundations Fullerton care shelter. Situated next to the Fullerton airport, this building was used to make airplane parts to prevent lightning strikes. The mural features an airplane rising above a lightning storm, and references the hopefulness of lives being changed and people rising above the personal storms they face.

Robin Paul Memorial Mural

Robin Paul Memorial Mural Allan B. Hall, 1959 In 1958, Robin Paul, a ten year old from Yorba Linda died in a car accident. At the time Yorba Linda was building a new library and Robin's paretns asked that donations be given in Robin's name to the library fund. The library board used the money to commission a work in honor of Robin. Allan B. Hall, a Yorba Linda resident, agreed to paint the 20' x 12' mural in 1959. The Robin Paul Memorial Mural depicts the 200 year history in the Yorba Linda region. The mural is a series of vignettes of area history including one with portrayals of Jose Antonio Yorba and the Portola expedition. Citrus, grape, and oil industries are represented and also included Richard Nixon, as is suggested by the silhouette of the US Capitol building. Nixon was Vice-President at the time of the mural being made. Now the mural resides in the Old Yorba Linda Packing House on Yorba Linda Boulevard. It was saved from possible oblivion by the Yorba Linda-based Save the Hall Mural Coalition.
