Milkmaids

Milkmaids Millard Sheets, 1960/1979 The two Millard Sheets murals on the Home Savings branches are at the intersection in Beuna Park across from Knotts Berry Farm. The milkmaids on the first branch represent an early, cut-out-of-black-granite model for installing the mosaics, before the Sheets Studio was completing all of the work in-house.

Mining Pecten Reef

Mining Pecten Reef Robert Evans The mural, Mining Pecten Reef by Robert Evans depicts the San Juan Capistrano Mission history in the late 1700s. Soon after Father Junipero Serra dedicated Mission San Juan Capistrano in 1776, Franciscan missionaries began converting local Acjachemen to Christianity and bringing them to the mission to learn the European way of life. These converts-or neophytes, as they were called-tilled the soil, tended the crops, and helped construct mission walls and buildings. The mission population increased steadily, and by the 1790's, lime was constantly needed to make the plaster and mortar used to enlarge existing buildings and to construct new ones. One source of this mineral was the fossil limestone reefs of ancient seabeds. Native-American neophytes cut blocks of limestone from deposits like that found in Pecton Reef (an exposure of the middle to late Miocene Monterey Formation located in what became Laguna Hills) and took them to the mission to be heated in ovens until they were reduced to the valuable powder.

Minjae Lee Mural

Minjae Lee Mural Minjae Lee, Diana Anderson, and Westminster High School, 2017 Under the direction of visual arts teacher Diana Anderson and designed by the South Korean artist Minjae Lee, Westminster High School students painted the Minjae Lee Mural, a mural portraying the different ethnic backgrounds of the students attending the school. The six faces in the mural were students randomly selected through a raffle. "A couple years ago, I started to bring in international and local artists for the students to work with. I wanted to have the students working side by side with these professionals so that they could learn new techniques and gain cultural experience, "said Diana Anderson. This mural was made thanks to a grant from Vans and Americans for the Arts.

Mission to Mars the Red Planet

Mission to Mars: STEAM and Mars Education - The Future of our Children Moises Camacho, 2017 Mission to Mars the Red Planet: STEAM and Mars Education - The Future of our Children, painted by Moises Camacho, contains realistic depictions of the multiple NASA spacecraft missions (from right to left in appearance: Cassini and Saturn, Mars Village, ExoMars, Curiosity, Opportunity, Sojourner, and Odyssey). The mural was commissioned by Urban Tech Santa Ana as part of their outreach program to encourage children and students in Santa Ana to pursue an education in "STEAM" (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). It was completed in February of 2017, the mural received a small addition in August 2018.

MLB All-Star Game

MLB All-Star Game Roberto Del Hoyo, 2010 MLB All Star Game can be seen from the street in front of the parking at James C. Fremont Elementary School in Santa Ana. It is located specifically on the side of the El Salvador Center building next to the baseball diamonds. Roberto del Hoyo, the mural's artist, used red, green, blue, black, yellow, and white colors to make his four silhouettes of baseball players stand out as the subjects. Incorporating baseball and community iconography, the mural promotes youth sport involvement, team and community building skills, and encourages youth to work towards achieving one's goals through sports.

Mormon Battalion Trek Through San Juan Capistrano

Mormon Battalion Trek Through San Juan Capistrano The new Mormon Meeting House comissioned a mural for their property depicting the Mormon Battalion march into San Juan Capistrano. In 1847, the Mormon Battalion a group of about 500 men, marched more than 2,000 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa, to San Diego to assist the United States in the war against Mexico. On March 20, 2004, a group of battalion reenactors paraded into San Juan Capistrano as part of the Swallows Day Parade and like the original battalion, they were warmly welcomed. This mural is about 4 ft by 10 ft and is located at the entrence to the Meeting House at 29273 Stallion Ridge Road near San Juan Hills High School. It was commissioned by the Meeting House to meet the Depiction Policy of the City.

Mosaic Mural

Mosaic Mural Millard Sheets The colorful history of Anaheim is depicted in a mosaic mural decorating the former Home Savings & Loan Association building (now Washington Mutual). Nationally recognized artist, Millard C. Sheets was commissioned by Home Savings & Loan Association to create murals at their branches throughout California.

Moulton Ranch Center Mural Tim Smith, 2020 The Moulton Ranch Center's (formerly the Cabot Town Center) mural Moulton Ranch Center Mural by Tim Smith captures the spirit of Orange County's ranching heritage. Laguna Hill's first mural was completed by Tim Smith, LCAD Graduate. This vista was created from historical images from the archive. It is located on the exterior of the Howard's building.

Mowgli Murals

Mowgli Murals Tara Chklovski, 2006 "I wish to commend Tara Chklovski on her outstanding dedication, creativity, and perseverance in designing and supervising the completion of an amazing series of full-courtyard murals for Wilson Elementary in Santa Ana, CA in June, 2006. These murals were commissioned as part of a corporate volunteer project supervised by L.A. Works," said Larry Deckel, Director of Programs L.A. Works. "The ecosytems/animals on parade murals have truly enhanced the learning environment at Wilson School. Students, staff and parents have continued to provide positive comments regarding the impact within the school community. Not only have the murals provided students with an educational tool to learn about animals and their attributes, they have also instilled upon our students a sense of pride," said Robert Anguiano, Principal of Wilson Elementary School.

Nautilus Shell Mia Tavonatti, 2003 Funded by Powell, Dudley, Frith Architects This mural is made entirely from hand cut glass mosaic tiles that are intricately installed representing the shades and luminosity of the nautilus shell. The nautilus shell is a recurring theme in public art throughout the city. City of Laguna Beach public art collection.

Night John Park, 2019 "When I was in art school, I concentrated almost 100% on classical art. Oil painting, sculpture, anatomy and really just focused on that throughout my entire schooling and into the first ten years I was out of school. When I moved to L.A., at the time it was called pop surealist movement, it had a huge influence on me. There's this amazing, vibrant modern art movement that still involved a high level of skill. That was the thing about modern art when I was studying it in school; it all seemed to be very deskilled, very high concept, low execution. So when i saw what was happening out here, I just knew I had to be part of it and I realized that the classical training was the perfect sort of launching pad to figure out what my actual creativity was going to be." The artist says, "One of my favorite modern trends is this need that all of these new developments have for putting artwork into their construction and actually planning for it. Public art brings so much more to any development, any neighborhood. I think that people are especially intrigued by it, especially the larger the scale. It's an amazing path forward for a lot of artists. My hope is that when people see this piece, they stop and at least feel a little happy and at least feel that they have experienced something a little bit more beautiful in their day than they would normally run into."

Ningun Ser Humano Es Ilegal

Ningun Ser Humano Es Ilegal No Human Being is Illegal SAPO, 2009 A collage of images including the following symbols and archetypes: the fifth sun, el quinto sol stone image from the Tonalponalli Aztec Calendar, the Virgen Guadalupe, fertile fields and dessert mountains, image of the US/Mexico border and someone crossing over. On the wall of the border, there are words that say, "ningun ser humano es ilegal." The image of a young man who died in front of the wall is also painted in his honor. This was the first mural painted by SAPO (Siempre Aprendiendo Pintar Obedeciendo), a collective of young artists and community organizers who spent 2 weeks prior to painting the mural consulting the residents at "Villa del Sol" apartments and homes surrounding the wall. While doing this, they met family members of a young man who had been killed by a drive-by a few weeks before the mural was painted. The family members also helped with painting. The US/Mexico border and words "Ningun ser humano es ilegal" were painted due to a morning raid done by ICE terrorizing the residents of "Villa del Sol." The mural established a sense of pride and power of collectivity.

Nuestra Experiencia en el Siglo Viente Emigdio Vasquez, 1980 This mural was restored by Higgy Vasquez in 1996. This mural is Emigdio Vasquez's most complete chronology of the Chicano/a experience adding depictions of the Mexican Revolution in 1910, immigration to the U.S. for agricultural and industrial work through the Bracero Program, the whitewashing of David Alfaro Siqueiros's America Tropical (1932), the Zoot Suit Riots, celebrations at the Harmony Park Ballroom, WWI, WWII, the atom bomb, UFW strikes, the deprotations that violated human rights through Operation Wetback, the Vietnam Wart, and Ruben Salazar's death during the Chicano Moratorium, among other important events.

Nurture Your Family

Nurture Your Family Isais Crow and Werc Alvarez, 2013 Isaias Crow is an international muralist, speaker, and author. He is inspired by the spirit realm and even describes himself as a spirit guide. Crow hopes audiences will appreciate the patterns of color and shape he and muralist, Werc Alvarez, have incorporated in this space. Both Werc and Crow have very unique styles of art that are shown in the mural; however, their styles blend into an amazing masterpiece. The main distinction between their artwork is that Alvarez focuses on animals, while Crow's focus is on human facial features. Though they worked separately on their portians of the mural a story emerges oas a result of their long collaboration and trust in each other. A figure on the left, where Werc painted, looks vaguely like a serpent, or maybe an Aztec warrior - maybe an Aztec warrior from outer space. The two artists, longtime friends and collaborators who attended El Paso High School together, have bleanded their work in a colorful, and otherworldly piece.

OCEAA Playground Mural

OCEAA Playground Mural Brian Peterson, 2021 OCEAA's (Orange County Educational Arts Academy) new playground is 10k plus square feet and features this immersive playground mural. This mural is installed at OCEAA Charter school in Santa Ana. The murals were part of the initiative to renovate the playground for the upcoming school year. It reflects the ideas and concepts that the parents and children of OCEAA wanted to see - nature, gardening, sports, and games. The new artwork features activities that increase learning as children play games. PPG Paints sponsored the project. UCI brought in content innovators from the School of Education to help with the mural. PPG Paints brought the Colorful Communities program to the school as well.

Old California

Old California Mary Ellen Weherli, 1998 Mary Ellen has an affinity for nature. While she creates abstract works, her representational pieces are more prevalent, including this mural. "It's a montage of California - the orange grove, the mission, the water, and the ridge - all tie into the history of California," Mary Ellen explained. The second panel pays homage to the Asian field workers, who once cared for the abundant orange groves. "That's part of the history of Southern California too." Funded by the Art-A-Fair Festival City of Laguna Beach public art collection.

Old San Juan

Old San Juan Randy Morgan, 2021 The Capistrano Plaza art installation is a seven-panel project that measures 11 feet high by 17 feet long. It captures the diverse 200-year history of San Juan Capistrano and Orange County. Dan Almquist, a local businessman commissioned the piece. The seven panels, that make up the mural, weigh roughly 100 pounds each and took six months for Morgan and his team to complete. The panels cover such key historical events as the Portola Expedition by colonial Spanish explorers in 1769 and the establishment of the Los Rios Historic District in 1794, plus scenes of everyday life depicting Vaqueros. One of the panels, entitled Taming of the Bear is about how bears in 1860 would become a sort of sport for the Vaqueros, where they would rope them from varying angles and pit them against bulls for entertainment. Another panel called The Portola Expedition. It was first land-based exploration by the Spanish to establish Catholic missions and to create a Spanish (European) foothold in California (Alta California). The Acjachemen/ Putuidem Village is another one of the seven panels. The village of Acjachemen and the close proximity to Putuidem would provide a workforce for the building of the Mission and souls to convert to Christianity.

Olive Park Mural

Olive Park Mural Katherine England, 2010 The Olive Park mural by Katherine England (assisted by Valencia Park Elementary School students along with community and business volunteers) was funded by All the Arts for All the Kids and Raytheon Company. The bright and colorful mural depicts different activitied people can do. At the far end, it starts out with the word, "read" with a painted person reading a book. "Celebrate, trust, sing, and play," come next, each showing someone engaged in that activity. The mural ends with "live and love," before jumping to an unpainted brick wall background with only the words, "in Fullerton" on it. So altogether reading from left to right, the mural says, "read, celebrate, trust, sing, play, shop, worship, dance, nuture, live, and love in Fullerton.

Open Door Policy

Open Door Policy Andi Goud, 08/2020 Andi Goud's mural is of an octopus opening a door. It is located on the end of the Pier. This artwork was sponsored by PierPride Foundation and was dedicated August 25, 2020.

Open Sea

Open Sea John Iwerks The mural Open Sea was painted by John Iwerks. Muralist John Iwerks studied landscape painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking at Santa Barbara Art Institute, Mendocino Art Center, and Santa Barbara City College. He is a founding member of The Oak Group, a group of artists who paint in support of protecting natural landscapes and the environment, and has long been involved in interesting projects that involve natural history. He has worked in Exhibit Design and Mural painting for many organizations. In addition, he has painted murals for dozens of other community venues and several colleges. His primary focus is on the geologic forces that influence the gesture of landforms, as well as capturing life in motion.

Orange County Graffiti Mural

Orange County Graffiti Mural Graffiti LA The team of Graffiti LA worked with the team at Rollin Deep Ice Cream in Costa Mesa. With their roots in New York City, the shop wanted to incorporate the feeling of the gritty New York street art aesthetic and tell the story of their transition from the East to West Coast. This concept worked well with the artists because they had ties to the NYC graffiti culture before becoming based in Los Angeles. The Rollin Deep shop wanted elements of NYC (subways, Brooklyn Bridge, Skyline, etc.) mixing into landmarks of Los Angeles (the Pier, Hollywood Sign, Palm Trees, Freeways, etc.). Rollin Deep Ice Cream has closed and it is unclear whether they will open again.
