Award Winning, 1995 - - Public Art at Koll Anaheim Center

Public Art at the Koll Anaheim Center Daniel Martinez, Nobuho Nagasawa, and Buster Simpson, 1995 The Koll Anaheim Center is a three block long urban complex, across from Anaheim City Hall, in downtown Anaheim. Artists Daniel Martinez, Nobuho Nagasawa, and Buster Simpson conceived the overall streetscape concept of this space together, but each produced artwork individually. The site-specific components, including street furniture and free standing sculpture, recall the agricultural, historical, industrial, cultural, and natural heritage of Anaheim. The Architecture Foundation of Orange County recognized City of Anaheim Redevelopment Agency with the 1995 Art in Public Places Award.

Canyon Chess and Checkers

Canyon Chess and Checkers Marlo Bartels, 1981 Laguna Beach artist Marlo Bartels had no idea that this ceramic tile game table and chairs, created for Main Beach would become his signature and a city land mark. Working in ceramics, Marlo shapes, forms and glazes each element by hand before assembling them. Funded by the City of Laguna Beach and the National Endowment for the Arts

City Hall Letters City Hall Letters are sculptural letters spelling out Stanton and are located in front of Stanton City Hall.

Dive In Plaza Donna Billick and RockArt, 2004 This bronze sculpture, terrazzo pavers, with colored concrete us located adjacent to Concession.

Henry Dotson Park Pirate Ship

Henry Dotson Park Pirate Ship David Volz Design Landscape Architects Inc., 2008 The most prominent feature of Henry Dotson Park is a massive two-story pirate ship which is fully ADA accessible by ramp. The Pirate Ship, with its thirty-five-foot tall sails dominates the skyline of the park. It is moored in a lagoon of blue ruble surfacing where children can discover other features including a large treasure chest, jewel crusted paving, climbing boulders, as well as imprinted animal tracks and dinosaur fossils.

Plant Maze and Fossils

Plant Maze and Fossils Stone artwork created by children of the community, 2000 The Plant Maze is an 80 foot circle of hedges that are designed to intrigue the young at heart into trying to find the center of the maze. The maze, created in 2000, was done to celebrate the fossils of the local South Orange County area. The plant maze has stepping stones that were created by the children of the community with their imprints. Bear Paws and Dinosaur markings were added into the sidewalk to add fun and excitement to the space.

Planter Box

Planter Box Dave Maestrejuan, 2004 This planter box, located in a pedestrian alley near Harbor & Commonwealth was a CUFFS project supervised by Fullerton Museum Center. Maestrejuan was assisted by high school students from Fullerton, Anaheim, and Buena Park.

Prehistoric Playground

Prehistoric Playground During the development and construction of the Laguna Hills Community Center and Sports Complex, the design team researched and collaborated with a paleontologist and various artists to create a paleo-adventure playground that reflects the historical significance of the area. A replica of fossil reef has been recreated by the playground bridge and has imprints of actual fossils that are over 15 million years old. Under the bridge, a 70 million year old fossil repilca of a Hadrosaur is imbedded into the bridge wall, along with fossil pieces of a saber toothed cat, duck-billed dinosaur and mammoths. The prehistoric playground contains fossils - real and replicas - that represent a rich diversity of ancient life from the changing Laguna Hills environments. To walk across the playground is to walk through time. By enjoying the many paleontological features located throughout the playground, visitors can discover the ancient life that walked, swam, and flew thousands of years ago in the Saddleback Valley.

Repose

Repose Gerard Basil Stripling, 2003 Funded by the City of Laguna Beach Art in Public Places Laguna Beach artist Gerard Basil Stripling created this five piece functional sculpture on the point overlooking the ocean, Gerard explained, “I wanted it to look as though it had always been there, and that the land surrounding had only recently been excavated, revealing the rocks jutting into the ocean below.” Repose is a metal piece that stands on a narrow peninsula in Treasure Island Park, Laguna Beach. Five metal arcs are arranged to recall the rock formations and ocean waves below and serve as informal seating elements. Repose is part of the City’s percent-for-art program.The Architecture Foundation of Orange County recognized Artist Gerard Stripling with the 2006 Award of Special Recognition. Support

Support Louis Longi, 1999 211 North Coast Highway Funded through a donation by the Inn at Laguna Artist Designed Bench “Support” created by Laguna Beach artist Louis Longi pays homage to the City’s long history and commitment to the arts, both through public art and the annual art festivals. The installation also gives visitors a respite at one of the most panoramic views in town. Three hallow figures support the seat, giving the bench its name. Temple of Bliss

Temple of Bliss Holmes & Narver, 2001 Temple of Bliss is a functional art piece that includes six columns with an iron dome for sitting and viewing the surroundings.

The Clock in the Depot District

The Clock in the Depot District Electric Time Company, Inc., 2020 The public American traditional street clock erected at the foot of Verdugo Street was a gift to the City from the Rotary Club of San Juan Capistrano in 2020. Street clocks of this nature were first seen in Victorian England and first appeared in the eastern United States in about 1870. Similar clocks were an early form of advertising and frequently placed in front of city halls, train stations, banks, jewelry stores, parks and other public locations. In major urban areas, such clocks have become a meeting place for friends. Today, the street clock stands as an American tradition. It is a symbol of our pride in workmanship, our stability, and our sense of community. It is both a dignified reminder of our historical past and a legacy for the future. The 16' 7" cast iron 4-Dial Washington Post was manufactured for San Juan Capistrano by Electric Time Company, Inc. in Medfield, Massachusetts. Each 36" dial is GPS Satellite synchronized and Led backlighted with photocell controlled lighting.

Tidal Pull

Tidal Pull Scott and Naomi Schoenherr, 2012 Based on a poem by Shelly Cooper, "Giggle Crack," the artwork features mosaics and bronze sculptures with ceramic inlay, complimented by large natural stone slab benches. "Our goal of this sculpture garden was to create an environment where the visitors can encounter and explore through the artwork with elements of discovery. Many cohesive elements were used to create a flow through the sculpture garden, connecting each artwork and also the city to the ocean," the artists explained. One of three pieces. Trio

Trio Jorg Dubin, 2000 Heisler Park Funded through a donation by Triad Financial Corporation Artist Designed Bench Laguna Beach artist Jorg Dubin installed three seating areas embossed with images of pre-historic marine wildlife. Located on a beautiful site overlooking Divers Cove, it provides a place for visitors to enjoy the spectacular views. "I wanted the shape of the piece to be kind of organic, maybe with a sense that it tumbled around in the surf," Jorg said. He believes that if the area was explored, fossils surely could be found. Villa Bella Grotto

Villa Bella Grotto Leah Vasquez, 1992 Funded by MacGillvray This pique assiette, or prickly seating, is composed of cement imbedded with bits of broken pottery and glass collected from local residents and beaches. The concept for the Villa Bella Grotto emerged directly from the dictates of the site and the idea of how public art is accessed, created and experienced, Leah said. "I wanted this piece to be a gentle reminder of handcrafted and slower times; something that will be discovered while sitting, walking, taking a closer look, while at the same time being able to throw out a sparkle that one captures in the corner of one's eye while driving past at night, attracting the romance in all of us," the artist explained.
