Helen Lundeberg and Miriam Farrington, 1942

This mural depicts everything from the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in San Diego in 1542 to the birth of the aircraft and movie industries in Los Angeles in roughly chronological order. The artist is best known for her later, surrealist paintings. A WPA commission, it was covered from 1963 to 1987, and restored in 1991 as part of the city’s centennial.
