Gerard Basil Stripling, 2003

Funded by the City of Laguna Beach
Art in Public Places

Laguna Beach artist Gerard Basil Stripling created this five piece functional sculpture on the point overlooking the ocean, Gerard explained, “I wanted it to look as though it had always been there, and that the land surrounding had only recently been excavated, revealing the rocks jutting into the ocean below.” Repose is a metal piece that stands on a narrow peninsula in Treasure Island Park, Laguna Beach. Five metal arcs are arranged to recall the rock formations and ocean waves below and serve as informal seating elements. Repose is part of the City’s percent-for-art program. The Architecture Foundation of Orange County recognized Artist Gerard Stripling with the 2006 Award of Special Recognition.
