The Spirit

The Spirit

James Hill, 2007

The Spirit was constructed by James Hill. This piece is located at Mission Hospital. The work of art includes two intertwined pieces of textured stainless steel, referred to as the “spark of life,” that lay under the center arch. It represents energy and vitality of life and a spiral surrounding the flame is reminiscent of the legendary and universal insignis of the medial profession, the caduceus.

The eloquent artwork, Spirit, creates a landmark corner for the 38-acre Mission Hospital campus as well as the City of Mission Viejo. Grand, curved arches in soft brown, oxidized steel act as a frame for the artwork with clear reflection of California Mission architecture. Beneath the center arch are two intertwined pieces: the “spark of life” flame in textured steel representing Mission Hospital’s commitment to Everything for Life and spiral surrounding the flame in oxidized steel reminiscent of the enterprising insignia of medical profession caduceus. These three distinct elements work in tandem to express a welcome to the essence of Mission Hospital and Mission Viejo.
