San Juan Capistrano Mission Mural
San Juan Capistrano Mission Mural
Jamie Santaniello, 1999
This historical artwork, The San Juan Capistrano Mission Mural, is one of the most memorable pieces of work Santaniello has ever designed. The tile mural had to be a specific size (13.5 feet x 13.5 feet), so it could be installed into a recessed area of a major wall inside the main lobby of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Building in San Juan Capistrano, California.
The mural design by Santiello went through a rigorous process and was approved by the City Council of San Juan Capistrano and the Historical Society of San Juan Capistrano, some members were Juaneno Indians. Kaiser Permanente, being a healing institution, Jamie wanted the mural scene to feel soft, spiritual and restful. Jamie was asked to include in the rendering the Juaneno Indians, the Spanish soldiers and the Padres, and from various resources Jamie created a scene showing what life may have been like at the Mission between the years 1814 through 1820.
