Art is Joy

Art is Joy Katherine England Katherine England is a prolific visual artist who also teaches in schools, in her studio, and at art retreats nationwide. In addition to creating and promoting public works of art, Katherine has taught and has been an activist for art education in the public school system for nearly twenty years. Her favorite medium right now is glass and she loves breaking, nipping, melting, and coaxing it into playful patterns and whimsical figures. Her largest mosaic piece is 40' by 8' but she also enjoys playing with tinier pieces. A variety of people and institutions seek out Katherine to create unique commissioned pieces for their offices, stores, and places of employment, and her work can be seen in both private and public collections throughout the United States.

Beach Scenes

Beach Scenes Millard Sheets, 1970 This mosaic, Beach Scenes by Millard Sheets, was purchased by Mark Hilbert for the Hilbert Museum of California Art and was dismantled on June 19, 2019 with the assistance of Tony Sheets. During the museum's renovation the mosaic sits in storage. It will be re-installed on the exterior facade of the Museum completed by June 2023. This mosaic was originally untitled. It was a part of Millard Sheets' series of commissioned mosaics for Home Savings building facades in Southern California. Most mosaic commissions by Sheets were untitled. It was popularly known as "Beach Scenes" or "Pleasures Along the Beach." Public Art in Public Places applied this title to the mosaic, it might be renamed when installed. It was located at 26th Street and Wilshire Blvd before being moved to the Hilbert Museum.

Character Garden Trailhead and Mosaic History Wall: "cultivating a community character" Several hundred volunteers, 2004 The Character Garden Trailhead was created in 2004 with the help of several hundred volunteers who painstakingly placed 1000’s of small pieces of tile to create 14 pictorial images of Mission Viejo’s History beginning from the prehistoric times to the incorporation of the city. The Character Garden Trailhead is designed with 3 separate spaces. The Character Garden has 12 unique words. These Community Character words are the “backbone” of the Community and are imprinted into the backbone shaped concrete. The Garden culminates with the Character Rock Fountain. The Trail head also has a dry stream bed with beautifully painted butterflies.

Garden Grove Mosaic

Garden Grove Mosaic Robin Marcario One hundred and fifty people participated in the creation of this mosaic. Robin said her dream was to get the community to be involved in the making of her tile murals.

Garden Grove Mosaic 2 Robin Marcario This 3 panel piece welcomes visitors into Garden Grove from Seal Beach. It says "Garden Grove" in mosaic. The three different pieces were put together by the community at three different events. All her tile work includes a nature theme. The mosaics can feature shells, glass tiles, marbles, and stones.

Garden Grove Mosaic 3 Robin Marcario This mosaic mural is located at the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Trask Avenue. It welcomes vistors into Garden Grove from Westminster. The mosaic spells out "Garden Grove." Robin Marcario says the reason that she makes these mosaic murals is "to brighten our public space." Robin also says that it is the daily exposure to art that is important.

Life Force

Life Force Dora De Larios, 2003 Funded by the Montage Resort and Spa Art in Public Places Los Angeles artist Dora De Larios' porcelain wall sculpture took 15 months to create. Dora strived in this installation to harmonize the animal and the spiritual, the earthly with the divine. Her artistic world is populated by mythological creatures and imaginary scenes as can be seen in this intricate mural. City of Laguna Beach public art collection.

Magnolia Park Family Resource Center Mosaic

Magnolia Park Family Resource Center Mosaic Robin Marcarion, 2020 The City commissioned local artist Robin Marcario to create artwork that symbolized the community vibrant culture. The mosaic features unique elements, including descriptive words added into the art by the center's youth group, SOL (Strengthing Our Leadership). Originally the mosaic was planned to be unveiled in 2020 at the center's 20th anniversary, but was postponed due to COVID-19.

Milkmaids

Milkmaids Millard Sheets, 1960/1979 The two Millard Sheets murals on the Home Savings branches are at the intersection in Beuna Park across from Knotts Berry Farm. The milkmaids on the first branch represent an early, cut-out-of-black-granite model for installing the mosaics, before the Sheets Studio was completing all of the work in-house.

Nationally recognized artist, Millard C. Sheets was commissioned by Home Savings & Loan Association to create murals at their branches throughout California.

Mozambique Mia Tavonatti, 2005 Funded by Mozambique Restaurant LLC Art in Public Places This mosaic was designed to depict the galleons of the early Portuguese explorers as they sailed off the coast of Africa in search of spices. The mosaic technique used by this artist dates back to Roman times 2000 year ago. Each glass tile, the size of a thumbnail, is precisely placed to create the larger image. Mustang Legacy Wall Project

Mustang Legacy Wall Project The Costa Mesa High School Foundation, 2017 The Costa Mesa High School Foundation celebrated the opening of the Mustang Stadium in the fall of 2017. The goal is to memorialize the stadium by creating a Legacy Wall at the entryway. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of our Mustang family where students, faculty, clubs, alumni, and community can make their mark for years to come. All proceeds go to the Costa Mesa High School Foundation, whose mission is to enhance the education opportunities at Costa Mesa High School/ Middle School.

Oil - The Evolution

Oil - The Evolution Marlo Bartels, 2017 Like a large derrick. Brea is founded on oil, the first people in Brea were oil well cutters. Wanting to use the image of an oil derrick, it has five sides so you can see more than one side at a time. It includes through the crossbars of the derrick the landscape of Brea (pepper trees, poppies, and cactus). At night it lights up. Depicted around the base are diatoms- the microscopic single cell organisms that when they are pressed under the ocean it creates oil. It is part of a 3/4 mile park part of Blackstone Homes. Oil Exploration Marlo Bartels, 2017 The pillars depict the flowers of Brea. The stairs show photographs of Brea from the Historical Society. It includes photographs that are mounted on tile of early images from the Historical Society to give a feeling of what Brea looked like 100 years ago. Brea celebrates their centennial year in 2017. It also includes four columns that are reminiscent of the marker that was placed to remember the exploration of Portola when he came through this area. The obelisks are reminiscent of the column that was set in his honor. They are part of a 3/4 mile park and a part of Blackstone Homes. (Blackstone 5) Sponsored by Blackstone Homes, Inc.

Pasea Water and Wave

Pasea Water and Wave JVA Art Group, 2015 This piece is located on the Northeast elevation of hotel facing Pacific View Avenue. It is a photography based mosaic wall panel measuring 48' x 18'. The two versions for the mosaic wall are based on actual photography of waves/ water/ geography in Huntington Beach that has been abstracted.

San Juan Capistrano Mission Mural

San Juan Capistrano Mission Mural Jamie Santaniello, 1999 This historical artwork, The San Juan Capistrano Mission Mural, is one of the most memorable pieces of work Santaniello has ever designed. The tile mural had to be a specific size (13.5 feet x 13.5 feet), so it could be installed into a recessed area of a major wall inside the main lobby of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Building in San Juan Capistrano, California. The mural design by Santiello went through a rigorous process and was approved by the City Council of San Juan Capistrano and the Historical Society of San Juan Capistrano, some members were Juaneno Indians. Kaiser Permanente, being a healing institution, Jamie wanted the mural scene to feel soft, spiritual and restful. Jamie was asked to include in the rendering the Juaneno Indians, the Spanish soldiers and the Padres, and from various resources Jamie created a scene showing what life may have been like at the Mission between the years 1814 through 1820.
